Working from home becomes a nightmare for back pain sufferers: This patented pillow prevents back pain during sleep
If sitting is the new smoking, then working from home is the new chain smoking. By sitting for even longer periods in even more unhealthy postures, we are putting more strain on our spine than ever before. A simple way to counteract this is to sleep on your back. Gravity brings the spine back into its natural position.
It is important not to use a pillow that is too thick when lying on your back. Otherwise your head and neck will be bent forwards too much, which can lead to overloading of the cervical vertebrae during the day when working at a screen or looking at a smartphone.
Orthopaedists and sleep experts are therefore increasingly recommending not using a pillow at all in this sleeping position - as pain therapist Roland Liebscher-Bracht does in this video, which has been clicked on millions of times. It seems simple, but there's a catch.
Many people lack a feeling of security without a pillow. Or you simply don't know what to do with your head. Do you try to keep it straight or do you put it to one side? And what happens if you turn onto your side at night? Then there is no lateral support for the head and the vertebrae are exposed to completely different stresses.
The flexpillow pillow offers a solution to these problems.
It is based on a conventional orthopaedic neck support pillow, but has a bulge for the head. This allows you to sleep on your back without a pillow, but you can also switch to the side position at any time without having to do without the necessary support from the side supports. This allows the advantages of both sleeping positions to be combined.
The topic is more important than ever during the coronavirus pandemic. As a study by Spain's Universidad Rey Juan Carlos found, the number of people who spend more than four and a half hours a day sitting down increased by 7.4 per cent between 2002 and 2017. In Germany, 57.2 per cent of men and 50.2 per cent of women were already frequent sitters before coronavirus (1). That's more than half.
Working from home, contact restrictions and lockdowns are making the lack of exercise significantly worse. The commute to work and lunch breaks with colleagues are no longer possible. Leisure activities are shifting to the sofa at home.
One thing is certain: sitting for long periods is bad for your health. Researchers and doctors agree on this.
It not only favours cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, but also has a negative effect on our muscles and posture. One-sided strain, for example from a head bent forwards when working at a computer screen, leads to poor posture. This can result in back, neck or shoulder pain. In the worst case, poor posture can lead to postural damage that can no longer be reversed.²
This can be counteracted. And you can do it while you sleep - true to the motto "Sleep straight" is the new "Sit up straight".
